Cycle 1###
{Hello!! Mod Key here! Found a severe lack of Signalis roleplayers, but if I'm wrong, feel free to let me know! I use any pronouns, and Ari here uses she/her. All asks are okay, but... let's keep the purposefully upsetting ones to a minimum, yeah?} {Mod notes and OOC stuff will always be in the brackets used here, while actions will be italicized and dialogue in "quotes." Yippee!}

I (M/20) am looking for a roleplay partner.
Literacy: Any form so long as it's coherent. I'd prefer to avoid one liners but everyone had their moments where they draw blanks.
Fandom: Signalis
Pair: MxM, MxF
Character(s): NKLR-101 (Replika OC)
Ship(s): OCx??
Triggers: None come to my mind immediately but should you have any, please tell me.
Genres: Sci-Fi, Dystopia
Plot ideas: As with any Replika, the first rule is to not befriend them as they aren't human. Of course, as a replika's persona develops, how can they seem anything but human? Your character (a Gestalt, i.e. Human) comes to disregard this rule.

Ok I will try to playtest solo my Signalis TTRPG as a journaling game using a tarot deck as an oracle to replace the GM (in a way).
I am not certain if it will work but I will give it a try, maybe it will help me fine tune things.
I will start by creating my character.
STCR-E675
Persona +0 System +0 Resolve +0
Harm boxes: 4 Regard slots: 3
Pick two moves: -Unwavering: stabilize yourself or someone else by 1 after a fight or an argument -Nitpicker: take +1 forward after criticizing the work of someone
Character creation questions (rolled randomly)
>Roll d6 (2) Which trait of your persona template you have become selfconcious about? After working with MNHR units I have noticed how Storchs can be impatient and impulsive, and I am trying to be more patient with the Starlings now but it is hard.
>Roll d6 (1) Someone you touched once, do they avoid you now? I once had to help a wounded STAR unit to make it back to the base and we held hands. It felt special in that moment but we did not talk since then. Seem like she, Starling 955 is also assigned to the mission.
>Roll d6 (3) A confiscated item? a roll of photocopied pages from a Imperial romance novella, that was well… should have been censored. I confiscated them from Starling 2366. I keep them rolled in an empty ration tube.
Pick one answer to create a key memory: I pick holding the hand of Starling 955.
Roll what you remember from the previous loop to create your second key memory. (Normally the target of the memory is another player character who is also stuck in the loop, but I will create a NPC here since I play solo)
>Roll d6 (5) Loop memory: hiding together in a room, what is lurking outside? What is strange in the room? I vaguely remember hiding in the morgue with EULR3799, something with too many arms was lurking outside. One of the corpse was wearing a funeral mask, it creeped out 3799.
MANDATORY JOURNALING STCR-E675
Entry 01
Our Halley transport ship arrived in orbit of Leng. I woke up from long stasis, my memories all mixed up and cloudy from the hard reboot. I remember holding a hand and a room full of body bags, an EULR unit was with me.
Our mission is to reclaim the research station Weierstrass and to make it fit for service again, I have been assigned to the first dropship with Commander Falke, a full cadre of STAR units and KLBR kommando. The starlings chatter excitingly together. I smile when I notice that 955 have been assigned to my squad, I am relieved to see that she was fixed and not decommissioned. Starling 2366 keep looking at me nervously, she must be worried about the confiscated pages.

Altimeter Red
2 Players - one Android and one Anomaly.
Anomaly: describe your realm, falling from the sky.
Android: describe who sent you to end this, not fully trustworthy.
Altitude starts at 6; Obstacle starts at 4; these will both decrease over the following Rounds.
In each round, the Anomaly sets out a challenge, and the Android responds with Steel or Breath.
On choosing Steel, the Android powers through by force, mechanical precision, or loyalty to operators. Choose two: (a) Decrease Obstacle by one (b) Only lose one Altitude this Round (otherwise, flip a coin to determine -1 or -2) (c) No damage sustained (otherwise, describe how it hurts)
On choosing Breath, the Android overcomes using creativity, taking a risk, or forbidden emotion. Keep a count of how many times Breath has been chosen per game. 1st and on, minimal damage sustained. 2nd and on, decrease Obstacle by one. 3rd and on, only lose one Altitude this round (otherwise, flip as above).
If Altitude reaches zero first, impact occurs and chaos rises.
If Obstacle reaches zero first, the Android reaches the Heart of the Anomaly. Android, make your choice: Kill her. Job done. Embrace her. The world is forever changed.

Tumblr 200-Word RPGs 2023
Last November, we did an informal game jam for folks who wanted to write something for Writing Month, but would prefer to write fewer than fifty thousand words of it. You can find the complete list of participants for that event in this post here. There's also an off-Tumblr archive of entries whose authors gave permission for them to be preserved here, if any of those links turn out to be broken.
Last year's collaboration went over well enough that I thought we might dust it off again this year. To be clear, this is just for fun – it's not a curated jam, and nobody's judging winners or handing out prizes..
If you'd like to throw your hat in, just follow these steps:
Step 1: If you're unfamiliar with 200-word RPGs, read a bunch of last year's entries (linked above) or browse the 200 Word RPG Challege archives at https://200wordrpg.github.io/ to get your brain-meats properly configured.
Step 2: Write your own 200-word RPG. If you're not sure whether you have 200 words or not (and with RPGs it can genuinely be difficult to tell!), you can use the word counter at https://200wordrpg.github.io/wordcount to check.
Step 3: Reblog this post and append your 200-word RPG.
Step 4 (optional): Please indicate in your post whether you're okay with having your 200-word RPG archived off-site for posterity – if you don't say anything one way or the other, I'll assume the answer is "no".
(As before, as a courtesy to anyone who's creeping the notes, please restrict non-200-word-RPG commentary to replies and tags until November 2023 is over – let's make the actual games easy to find!)

> "The walls... they slither. And it's fucking annoying. People have been spreading rumors that something in the vents has been taking units. Tired of hearing it. It's probably just some REHRs making the noise. Though, no idea what's been happening to the units."

A Reunion.
House Desparius, Revendreth, approximately five years after the end of the Shadowlands Operation...
Her arrival came unannounced, a sudden shimmer of the blood mirror and a soft, reverberant hum the only indication of an unwelcome guest. The Gravewing guarding the foyer stirred and snarled, slamming into the ground as the armored figure approached, black scarf drawn across the lower half of her face as golden eyes stared straight at the beast's vibrant reds, long ears poking up from her short, black hair. The Gravewing's impressive wingspan billowed across the hall, the hawklike beak of the stoneborn snorting as it sniffed out the woman. A plated hand greeted the beast's cheek, which it nuzzled, and with her other, she drew away her scarf, smiling softly.
"It's just me, Corvallis. It's just Raynell."
Her ears perked to the approach of footsteps, a tall, gaunt looking Venthyr woman striding through the foyer. Greyed, messily combed tresses frame her sunken features, and a near skeletal hand raises a finger to point at the Blood Knight.
"Your presence has been expected...if not unwelcomed. You still have a chance to leave well enough alone what burdens you've come to collect."
"You know as well as I, Confessor, that I don't intend to leave without them," Raynell retorted, stepping astride the Gravewing to confront the Venthyr. "Their power is needed...and I need to put these nightmares to rest."
"...Very well," the Venthyr rasped, letting out a heavy sigh as she stepped aside and motioned ahead to a tall set of double doors. "They are waiting for you."
Raynell nodded and stepped around the Confessor. As she approached the doors, she took a look over her shoulders. No longer did the Venthyr stand there, but in her place, an older elven woman in worn regalia, a look of sorrow on her face.
"I tried what I could to separate and recover their essences...to no avail. I am sorry, Raynell."
"...I am too," Raynell whispered, turning away to bow her head and close her eyes for a moment. With a firm push, the doors open, and into the pitch black, she strode, the doors slamming behind her as she stood in darkness.
The flicker of flame echoed in the chamber, the wall sconces brimming with warm light. At the center of a stone chamber was an altar built like a large stone sword, the lifeless stone suddenly brimming with sinewy red anima. Embedded in its center, surrounded by the blood red wisps of energy emanating from the altar, was a sword of blackened steel, a ruby gem embedded in the hilt and a gold chain with a large amethyst wrapped across the guard. A soft, ethereal, discordant hum softly emanated from the altar itself just above the soft scrape of metal boots echoing through the chamber as Raynell A'laria, Blood Knight Captain, approached the altar. She stopped short as the discordant noise suddenly rose and the brimming red energies began to coalesce. The knight winced, holding the bridge of her nose as pangs of discomfort assaulted her forehead. Her eyes opened again as the pangs subsided, a narrowed glare set upon a ghostly red figure that seemed to hover just above the greatsword.
"Vin'sarin."
The figure remained motionless, not even as much as a glance over the shoulder as it stared out ahead at the altar.
"Tch, not so much as a broody little sigh and wave? Have the years of imprisonment been so unki-"
The figure suddenly turned around, a booming, bass-heavy roar of indistinct sound shaking the stone chamber as Raynell stumbled backward, nearly toppling over. She hissed at the ghostly figure, now looking upon the skull-like visage under the hood, ears twitching as a haunting echo filled her ears, no louder than a murmur and yet beating against her eardrums like war drums.
"You returned for me..."
In the din of the echoing voice, Raynell could distinctly hear three presences melded into one. The first - the dark, deep rasp of her old comrade, Nalithas Vin'sarin, whose namesake now adorned the blade - and the phantom - before her. An upstart knight with a cruel streak, having slaughtered combatants and innocents alike before he fell only mere days into the Northrend campaign, his place taken by hers when the call finally came.
"Even after leaving me to fester in penance, to reflect upon my sin in these shadowed halls, while you walked in the light and followed the courageous hero's path...you still returned for me."
The second she was not as familiar with, but it was one revealed to her by the Lord of House Desparius, Rivan, as the former and sole occupying soul of the greatblade, Carmylla. A noble, lilting feminine voice, almost sickeningly sweet to the ears considering what cruelties the blade had carved out of would-be usurpers to Revendreth's order before she, herself, was usurped by Remornia in Denathrius's attempted purge of the House.
"Your comrade. Your friend. Your -wrath- made manifest."
The last presence made her stomach churn, the taste of bile at her throat as she struggled to keep steady in the presence of the blade. She faltered to her knees, grasping at her head. She felt her mouth open to scream but could hear nothing beyond the rapid, racing pulse of her heart and the discordant hum, now a wailing chorale. The nightmares from before rose to her mind's eye again. Pristine elven halls scattered in gore and viscera. Bloodied skulls trampled under gold-plated heels. Hands soaked in blood as they clutched to the pommel of the greatsword before her. Her gaze lifted from the blade and straight ahead as she stared at a bloodstained visage through the mirror.
The visage was hers. The last voice was hers. The visage grinned and spoke with pristine clarity in her own voice.
"What a fool."
The glass shattered, a sea of red blood flooding her vision before a distinct figure broke through: that of the phantom, the presence haunting the chamber, the altar, the very blade itself. The phantom of Vin'sarin, Sin's Severance. This time, however, there was no altar, no blade...only the disorienting swirl of red and black miasma as they occupied a space indistinct, a liminal representation of the Hell they shared.
"Now what drove you to return -here-, of all places, of all times?"
The droning echoes of the presence bombarded her ears once more, and a solid gulp clutched at her throat as she mustered a response.
"Spare me the theatrics, Vin'sarin! I have need of your power. Shadowflame threatens to engulf the work of the Emerald Dream, and my power alone is not-"
"ENOUGH," shouted Vin'sarin, the woman recoiling as the voice boomed in her ears. "You'd dare return to drag me along for your dalliances and daring-dos? We both know no penance is enough for the trails of Kaldorei blood we've spilt in the name of Silvermoon, of -your- Horde. You think protecting the dragonflight's precious little sapling will EVER make up for the ASHES you've left in your wake!?"
"And you would have me do -nothing-," the knight spat back, "and you content to DO nothing but wallow in this chamber, never to see the light of day!?"
The visage of Vin'sarin remained unmoving, but she could swear past the mask she could feel them snarl at her, feel the piercing glare behind the spiked blindfold. She glared right back, defiant, teeth grit and stance firm. A low chuckle echoed from the phantom, a hand outstretched.
"What a fool. You left here a hero unburdened. You now intend to return to your world with -our sins- crawling upon your back."
Raynell flinched at the statement. Our sins. Her mind raced with thoughts of regret, of bridges never mended and hatreds that still roiled beneath the surface. She reached out with her own plated hand, firmly grasping Vin'sarin's.
"I know what I am doing," she replied. "I won't let it end like last time."
The black and red miasma pulsed and rippled, suddenly closing in around them like waves crashing upon the shore. Raynell's vision drowned in the discombobulation, a heavy sinking feeling dragging her deeper into darkness...
She awoke with a jolt, a gasp escaping her lips as she sat up atop the altar. When had she collapsed? How did she even get to the altar in the first place? When did the sword -
The sword.
There, clasped in her gauntlets now, was Vin'sarin, Sin's Severance, the newly reborn Greatblade of Desparius. She could feel the weight, the burden, in her tensed hands. Wisps of crimson anima brimmed upon the surface of the red ruby embedded in the hilt. She carefully shuffled off of the altar and down the steps, blade slung over her shoulder. As footsteps echoed through the chamber, a voice murmured to her, an echoing phantom from the blade itself...
"Be it your will, however, then unleash me upon your foes, that they may know why I am Sin's Severance…"
(( OH WE ARE SO BACK. Had to get this out in the open because this had been sitting in the back of my mind for a good while now and I know Shadowlands stuff is kinda old/stale and the expansion itself was a giant wet fart but man I just could not get enough of the Venthyr stuff and want it to be central to Raynell's character going forward. Expect moar.
Also, just for funsies, a handy listening guide for each picture, which represents a segment of the story:
Ewige Wiederkunft - Cicada Sirens/1000 Eyes
Liminality - Cicada Sirens/1000 Eyes
Coal Ash Slurry - Cicada Sirens/1000 Eyes
Die Toteninsel (Emptiness) - Cicada Sirens/1000 Eyes
...Yes, they're all from the Signalis soundtrack. No, I refuse to elaborate. PLAY SIGNALIS. ))

a love letter to my favorite game
My favorite game is unlike any game I’ve played, comparing it to anything else i’ve played feels unfair, it’s barely a game but it could occupy my top 10 games by itself
It isn’t the most fun, engaging, adrenaline rush ever, ultrakill or titanfall have it comfortably beat in that category
It doesn’t have the most well constructed narrative, signalis has more intrigue and disco elysium is a better character study
but all of those are constructed, you always feel the hand of the author
There are games with better character creators, but they don’t let you actually *play* your characters
in baldurs gate you can change basically anything about your appearance, but at the end of the day the preset dialogue the developers came up with is your only real option for roleplaying
which is understandable, letting a character say *anything* would be basically impossible, there’s no way for an AI to account for every possibility. Though it still feels like half measure, like i’m playing a customized variant of a default character
The trick is to pack 100+ people into a game and let the situation unfold
A simulated space station with simulated air, you need a proper mix of Nitrogen and Oxygen or else you’ll suffocate (or waste oxygen)
your characters body is the most in depth health bar i’ve seen in a game
you have blood, everyone has an appropriate blood type, and getting the wrong type is toxic. If you get shot the bullet can cause internal bleeding, which you need surgery to fix.
The same bullet can hit your bone, breaking it, a broken hand won’t let you hold something, a broken leg will slow you down, a broken skull will be very bad for any important organs that happen to be in it
if you get hurt enough, your body goes into shock
it gets harder to breathe, you gasp for air and collapse onto the ground, struggling to get back up before dying, if you don’t get medical attention you will inevitably die
The Station itself is similar to a body, needing a working engine to pump electricity through the hull, making sure the lights stay on and the doors keep working
Breaches in the hull leak air out, needing an engineer to fix it before the room succumbs to vacuum, if the station computer gets a virus it can pump flammable gas into the same hallways, leading to the most lethal analogue for a fever since plague inc
And every person, the doctor that keeps you from bleeding out, the engineer that keeps the station powered, the security guard that makes sure the law is obeyed
every single one is a real, living human, a person who logs in to the server to play
the stories that this makes is unmatchable, you do something and everyone acts in the unpredictable but sane way that humans do
what happens when a crewmember takes a contract from a rival corporation, or said rival corporation decides that nuking your station would be a good idea
how do people react to a creature straight out of The Thing replacing a crewmate
what happens when a vampire starts abducting people and enthralling them?
what if a Space Wizard attacks?
No round is the same, and I haven’t even talked about half the jobs
There is something to love for anyone
there’s combat with more true to life pacing than dedicated shooters
there’s roleplay with more reactive characters than any constructed narrative
there’s always a way to optimize a system a bit more, always a reason to come back
It is my favorite game, it’s barely a game, it’s a playable movie
I spent my whole life learning lessons from media i watch, because they’re all meant to have a purpose, something to say
but i get really annoyed when someone does something stupid, i wonder what i would have done in their situation, i wouldn’t monologue before killing my victim, i wouldn’t go into the dark hallway with a xenomorph hiding in it
i know i’d find some other way to fuck up, and Space Station 13 gives me the chance to
I see this game in everything, it’s addicting enough that i barely realize i’ve been playing it for 8 hours straight, i have my current *real job* because of this game
and it’s free, short of donating to the people hosting the server, or the people working on the engine itself, you cannot spend money on this game
this game is older than i am, based in an engine that predates Y2K, and nothing released since has captured its magic
Play Space Station 13, you might not like it, it took me 2 tries over 3 years for it to click, but once it did I had hundreds of hours in my first few months of playing
as for where to start? Paradise Station is pretty cool. GoonStation (yes that’s its real name) is way more advanced than any other codebase, at the cost of lag. /TG/ is pretty ubiquitous, at least some code fragments from there are in every server.
Personally, i recommend Para, but each station i mentioned has an appeal to someone
If anyone who reads this gets a bit curious and does any amount of research into the game, I’ll be happy
thank you for your time, and I’ll see you in outer spess
#space station 13#ss13#rambling#the first person to compare this game to among us will be ground into a fiberous powder#mothposting

Imagine, for a fun little thought experiment, that SIGNALIS had a TTRPG?
Imagine I’m making one using my bespoke game system?
What if I told you it's first playtestable draft is available right here!
Finally what if I said I was looking to see if my mutuals were interested in collaborating on visuals and feedback? Or for playtest info from folks that were also signalis fans? Because I might be an illustrator but I am NOT a graphic designer nor am I infallible, and the more eyes on early versions the better IMO.
If you like narrative roleplaying and games like Blades in the Dark, I especially want to hear from you. This is my first public release of my tabletop mechanics so I'm equally filled with nerves and excitement.
I hope folks enjoy this little passion project! I'll be updating it more following feedback and further playtesting on my end.
